Commercial Waste and Recycling Franchise

The City of Highwood selected Lakeshore Recycling Systems as its exclusive waste and recycling hauler for all commercial services. This franchise agreement covers waste, recycling and organic services (food scrap/landscape). We will begin providing residential waste and recycling services to Highwood residents on May 1, 2017.

Lakeshore Recycling Systems is proud to service Highwood businesses and multi-family properties. As the City’s sole commercial waste and recycling hauler, Lakeshore Recycling Systems believes in finding innovative solutions that will create a better customer experience and protect the environment.

Lakeshore Recycling Systems can provide businesses with a year-round organics collection program for food scrap composting.

This organics program will give businesses the option to pick a container size based on their needs. Organic material containers are serviced on an as needed basis and charged per pickup.

Single-Stream Recycling

Having opened Chicagoland’s state-of-the-art single-stream recycling center in 2016, Lakeshore Recycling Systems focuses on waste diversion to recycle more and send less waste to landfills. Lakeshore Recycling Systems vows not to own or operate a landfill and is committed to making the surrounding communities a greener place to live.

Lakeshore Recycling Systems has a single-stream recycling center dedicated to sorting and separating recyclables. This 40,000 square-foot facility is designed to handle more than 110,000 tons of high-grade residential and commercial single-stream recyclables, sorting, separating and allocating over 20 tons of waste per hour.

  • Recyclable plastic items are #1 – #7 except #6.
  • Recycling materials should be loose and not bagged. If you must use a bag, it needs to be transparent. Black bags will be considered contaminated.
  • Containers that have previously stored liquid or food should be emptied. Food and liquid containers do not have to be rinsed unless it was previously filled with a heavy substance. Examples of heavy substance products include tomato paste, peanut butter and vegetable oil.
  • Lids and caps from plastic bottles and glass jars is preferred to remain intact prior to recycling.
  • To limit the amount of space used, break down any cardboard boxes into pieces.
  • The following items are NOT recyclable although they are made from paper, plastic and cardboard:
    • Pizza boxes
    • Styrofoam
    • Paper plates
    • Plastic cups (i.e. Solo cups)
    • Paper towels
    • Plastic grocery bags
