Residential Waste and Recycling Services

The City of Wheaton selected Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) as its exclusive waste and recycling hauler for all residential homes; a contract which went into effect on October 1, 2016.

Lakeshore Recycling Systems is Chicagoland’s leading independent recycling and waste diversion services provider. Lakeshore Recycling Systems does not own a landfill and is committed to raising awareness for a more environmentally sustainable and scalable business model that fuels the circular economy.

Wheaton Holiday Schedule

Observed holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

If a holiday falls on a Saturday, that actual day is the observed holiday. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, then Monday would be the observed day off. Residential pickup is behind one day throughout the week of the holiday.

New Technology: RFID

In order to verify service, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips are added to the current recycling carts and new garbage carts. Lakeshore Recycling Systems’ RFID technology implementation will track customer pickups and bill residents without the cumbersome act of buying stickers.

Garbage Stickers

With the implementation of RFID chips, garbage stickers will not be needed for weekly service. Residents will be charged a reduced rate for each garbage and recycling pickup.

Yard Waste/Organic Stickers

As a new service offering, Wheaton residents now have the availability to include food scraps (organics) with their yard waste. Stickers for this service can be purchased at a reduced price of $2.75 per sticker.

Miscellaneous Items

Stickers will be required for electronics, excess garbage and bulk items.

What Do Residents Need to Do?

Lakeshore Recycling Systems offers the following cart sizes:
35-gallon
65-gallon
95-gallon

Residents will receive a letter/invoice to sign up and establish a billing account with Lakeshore Recycling Systems.

  • Recyclable plastic items are #1 – #7 except #6.
  • Recycling materials should be loose and not bagged. If you must use a bag, it needs to be transparent. Black bags will be considered contaminated.
  • Containers that have previously stored liquid or food should be emptied. Food and liquid containers do not have to be rinsed unless it was previously filled with a heavy substance. Examples of heavy substance products include tomato paste, peanut butter and vegetable oil.
  • Lids and caps from plastic bottles and glass jars is preferred to remain intact prior to recycling.
  • To limit the amount of space used, break down any cardboard boxes into pieces.
  • The following items are NOT recyclable although they are made from paper, plastic and cardboard:
    • Pizza boxes
    • Styrofoam
    • Paper plates
    • Plastic cups (i.e. Solo cups)
    • Paper towels
    • Plastic grocery bags
