NORTH CHICAGO SERVICE

City of North Chicago Refuse, Recycling & Landscape Waste Collection Program

Effective November 1st 2022, garbage, recycling and landscape waste will be collected Monday-Friday, every week, in North Chicago, please reference the map below to confirm your collection day. NOTE: Your service day may have changed from the previous hauler. Service times may vary. Please have all materials placed curbside by 6AM to ensure collection.

LRS provides refuse (garbage), recycling and landscape waste services for North Chicago. LRS is a privately-owned company headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois with locations throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. We are proud to be a partner in your community!

Collection Guidelines

Please confirm with the map above for your designated service day. A Brochure confirming your service day was mailed to all homes at the start of the program. A copy of the brochure (not including service day) can also be found above.

All garbage, recycling and landscape waste will be collected starting at 6AM on the service day. Service times are subject to change. LRS provides wheeled carts with a flip-top lid and handlebar to throw your garbage in. All garbage carts are 95-gallon in size. Upon delivery of new LRS carts during implementation, a cart hanger will be attached to the cart that also confirms service day for your specific address. Residents may request an additional garbage cart by contacting the City of North Chicago.

There is no limit to the amount of garbage LRS will collect (so long as it is properly contained). Residents may use a non-LRS cart or container for waste or recycling materials if it does not exceed 32 gallons, 50 lbs. and has two handles.

LRS provides one cart for recycling at no charge for each household. Carts are available in the 65-gallon size. Additional carts are available upon request to the City. Contact LRS Customer Service for more information or with questions on recycling.

®     Recyclables are collected on the same day of the week as the garbage and yard waste

®     Each home will automatically receive a 65-gallon cart for recyclables

®     You are to use the LRS issued cart first for recycled materials

®     Please MARK the additional box or container used as RECYCLE so the driver can clearly see it

®     Plastic bags with recycling material will not be accepted

®     There is no limit to the amount of acceptable recyclable items that can be placed out for collection, provided they are properly prepared and contained

®     LRS suggests using a cardboard box as a makeshift bin and placing all broken down materials in the ‘bin’ if needed

®     Rental recycling bins are available upon request to the city in the larger size (95-gallon)

                                                                                      LRS Recycling Guidelines

Landscape waste is collected seasonally beginning on April 1st through December 15th on the same service day as your garbage and recycling.

What is considered landscape waste?

Landscape waste, also known as yard waste, consists of organic waste materials accumulated as the result of cultivation and maintenance of gardens, lawns, shrubbery, trees, and vines. All residential customers will be permitted to place up to six (6) bags, bundles, or containers per collection.

Approved landscape waste containers or bags

®     Bundles tied in biodegradable twine or string not to exceed 4’ length, 24” in diameter

®     Bundles should not exceed 50 lbs when full

®     Brush under two inches (2”) in diameter

®     Kraft bags not exceeding 32 gallons or 50 lbs when full

®     Flocked trees, trees with shiners, tinsel, light bulbs, glitter, wire, or plastic or in plastic bags will not be included in this special collection

“Bulk Items” are items that are too large to fit into a cart or can. LRS will collect one bulk item per week at no charge. If a bulk item is deemed hazardous or unacceptable for landfills, that item will not be taken. Please preschedule a pickup with LRS for these types of items.

How do I clean my cart?

Fill the cart with hot water and a capful of vinegar or grease-cutting dish soap. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse. Once the cart has been thoroughly rinsed, set the cart out with the lid open in the sun to dry.

What if I need my cart replaced?

Carts that are broken due to damage incurred during the collection are reported by the driver for replacement at no charge. Residents are encouraged to contact LRS if they notice damage to the cart during the collection process to request a replacement cart.

If damage occurs to the cart due to other reasons, please contact LRS to request a replacement cart.

Is this considered garbage?

Latex paint

Latex paint is considered regular garbage, but it must be completely dried, with the lid off so the driver is able to see inside the can. Dry latex paint by leaving lid off or open and/or mix kitty litter until the paint is completely absorbed. Do not place out for collection until the paint is completely dry.

Alkaline batteries

Alkaline batteries are considered regular garbage and should be thrown into the garbage. It is always recommended that tape be used on each end of the battery and placed into a plastic sandwich bag when disposing of them.

How do I report a missed pickup?

If your waste, recycling, or yard waste are not collected on the service day by 6 pm, please contact LRS by calling 847.381.9300 or e-mailing service@lrsrecycles.com

Please include your address and what service was missed.
