Summit Residential Refuse, Recycling and Yard-Waste Collection Program
LRS proudly provides Village of Summit residents with comprehensive services for refuse (garbage), yard waste, and more. In addition to weekly collection, LRS offers a variety of additional services, including:
- Recycling drop-off locations
- Electronic waste (E-waste) collection
- Organic food scrap composting
- Portable restroom rentals
- Large open-top construction-style containers

Service Day and Collection Guidelines – Village of Summit
LRS provides garbage and yard waste collection every Friday in the Village of Summit. All materials will be collected between 6 AM and 7 PM on your scheduled service day. Please note that collection times are subject to change.
Garbage Collection Guidelines
- There is no limit to the number of garbage bags you may set out.
- Bags may be placed loose next to your LRS cart or inside personal containers (35 gallons or smaller).
- Each bag or container must weigh 50lbs or less.
- All garbage must be placed inside containers with lids fully closed.
Important Reminders
- Garbage mixed with yard waste, leaves, or organic material will not be collected, as these materials are not permitted in Illinois landfills.
- No plastic bags or lose plastic material will be collected with yard waste or organic material.
Village residents can drop off glass, plastic, and paper for recycling at the designated bins located near the Municipal garage.

This service is available exclusively to Village of Summit residents. Please sort materials appropriately and help us keep the area clean.
Seasonal Schedule
Yard waste is collected seasonally, beginning on the first Friday in April and ending on the last Friday in November each year.
What Is Yard Waste?
Yard waste (also known as landscape waste) includes organic materials resulting from the care and maintenance of gardens, lawns, and trees, such as:
Grass clippings | Leaves | Shurb and hedge trimmings | Small branches and brush | Vines and other plant debris
Collection Guidelines
Residents may use the following for their disposal:
- 2-ply paper yard waste bags or brown craft bags
- Personal cans (33 gallons or smaller)
- Each bag or container must weigh 50lbs or less
Brush, Branches, and Limbs
- Must be bundled or tied with natural twine
- Bundles may not exceed:
- 3 feet in length
- 18 inches in diameter
- Small branches (3″ diameter or less) must be cut into 3-foot lengths and placed on the parkway
- Large branches (Over 3″ diameter) must be placed in the alley
- Please do not use plastic bags. Yard waste in plastic will not be collected
Christmas Tree Collection
In January, LRS will collect non-artificial Christmas trees as organic yard waste:
- Must be free of ornaments, tinsel, and lights
- Leave trees loose (not in bags) at your regular collection point
- Due to snow or ice, pickup may not occur on your regular service day, but crews will be in the area throughout the month
LRS collects bulk items (those that do not fit inside your refuse cart) on your regular service day.
Bulk Item Guidelines
- Each household may place up to two bulk items per service day
- Items must each weigh less than 75lbs
- Bulk items should be placed loose at the curb, not inside carts
Items over 75lbs may require special pickup. Please contact LRS to schedule.
Unacceptable Items
Bulk items will not be collected if they are:
- Hazardous
- Prohibited from landfills
- Deemed unsafe or unacceptable for regular disposal

Mattress & Box Spring Disposal
- Must be sealed in a plastic mattress cover and taped securely shut
- Plastic mattress covers can be purchased at:
- Walmart
- Lowe’s
- Menards
- Home Depot
- Most storage unit supply stores
- Alternative covering options:
- Heavy-duty plastic wrap
- Large trash bags (cut and taped to fully enclose the item)

Certain electronic items are banned from landfills in Illinois and cannot be placed in regular garbage.
To help residents dispose of these items responsibly, LRS provides an annual curbside E-Waste collection for households that are enrolled in LRS garbage and yard waste services.

Friday, July 18, 2025
- There is no charge for this service
- No need to schedule in advance
- Place items at the curb by 6 AM on collection day
- Alley pickup is not permitted
Acceptable E-Waste Materials
Computers | Computer Monitors | Televisions | Printers | Keyboards | Fax Machines | VCR’S | Portable Digital Music Players | DVD Player | Video Game Consoles | Computer Mouse Scanners | Digital Converter Boxes | Cable Receivers | Satellite Receivers | DVD Recorders | Small-Scale Servers
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes products that may:
- Catch fire
- React dangerously
- Explode
- Be corrosive or toxic
These materials are banned from landfills and will not be collected by LRS.
Examples of HHW:
- Oil Based Paints, Flammable Oils
- Oil, lead, urethane, chromium-based paints, shellac, water or driveway sealer, oil-based stain, varnish
- Pesticides / Herbicides / Fertilizers
- Poison, lawn chemicals, weed killer
- Aerosols
- Spray-paint, hairspray, WD-40, air fresheners, spray adhesives, oven cleaner, insecticide bug spray
- Automotive Chemicals / Fluids
- Antifreeze, brake or transmission fluid, gasoline, diesel, motor oil
- Houshold Cleaners (Acidic/Caustic)
- Bleach, ammonia, muriatic acids, pool cleaners, drain cleaners, solvents, paint stripper or thinner
- Bulbs / Batteries
- Fluorescent bulbs, CFL, NiCad, lithium, lead acid – Automotive, marine and sump pump batteries
White Goods or Appliances are household appliances that may contain hazardous materials such as:
- CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons)
- HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons)
- Mercury switches
- Other environmentally harmful components
Examples Include:

Collection Guidelines
- LRS will collect one (1) white good item per week
- Items over 75lbs require:
- Pre-payment
- Prescheduling with LRS
For scheduling or questions, please contact LRS customer service directly.
Some items may require extra labor or equipment to safely collect and dispose of. These are considered Special Refuse Collection items and are not guaranteed for pickup without prior review and approval.
Examples of Special Refuse Items:
- Sleeper sofas or oversized furniture
- Construction or remodeling debris
- Large entertainment centers or TV consoles
- Items that are unusually bulky, heavy, or complex to handle

If you’re tackling a home improvement or remodeling project, please note that construction and demolition debris is not part of regular curbside collection. These materials require special pickup and scheduling.

- Sod, fencing, concrete, rocks, and similar debris

Holiday service will be provided one day later than regular collection if the holiday falls Sunday through Friday. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, service will not be affected.
