Village of Elmwood Park residential waste & recycling services
Who is LRS?
LRS is one of the Midwest’s largest privately-held waste and recycle haulers. For over 20 years, LRS has been an industry leader in waste diversion and recycling initiatives which has led to less material ending up in landfills, and more material being redirected into the recyclable stream. Beyond conventional waste services, LRS is also Illinois’ leader in roll-off container services, portable restrooms, and street-sweeping services. These options enable us to offer residents and customers a complete-the-project option the way no other hauler can. With operations in Illinois and Wisconsin, LRS owns and operates nearly 15 material recovery facilities (MRFs), complimented by a fleet of nearly 600 fuel-efficient trucks. We operate at the highest industry standards, and take pride in finding ways and solutions that are consistent with our mission of sustainability, and value to our customers.
We look forward to partnering with the great community of Elmwood Park. We understand that the Village and its residents have high standards when it comes to waste, recycling and yard waste services, and will dedicate ourselves to exceeding them.

General Collection Guidelines
Your collection day will remain the same. All garbage, recycling and yard waste will be collected between the times of 7AM and 7PM on your collection day. Please place all items on your curbside or alleyway between 7PM the night before, and 6AM the day of collection. Containers must be removed from the curbside/ alleyway by 7PM on your collection day.
Garbage Collection
There is no limit to the amount of garbage bags we will collect. Please note: garbage mixed with yard waste, leaves or organic material will not be collected, as this material is not permitted in State of Illinois Landfills.
Bulk Items
Bulk items will be collected without the need for stickers. If an item exceeds 50lbs, residents may need to call LRS to schedule a special pickup. If a “bulk” item is considered hazardous, unacceptable for landfills or deemed unacceptable to take as garbage, the item(s) will not be taken. Mattresses must be completely wrapped to be collected. Please call LRS to see if such items can be scheduled for a special pickup.
White Goods
“White Goods” are appliances that contain CFC, HCFC, PCBs, mercury switches or other hazardous components (refrigerators, air conditioners, humidifiers etc).
DIY Construction
If an item exceeds 50lbs, residents may need to call LRS to schedule a special pickup. Any items less than that should be bundled (ei. carpet) or placed in the container. If an item is considered hazardous, unacceptable for landfills or deemed unacceptable to take as garbage, the item(s) will not be taken. Paint cans should be emptied or mixed with kitty litter to dry out the paint.
Recycling Collection
As has been the case in the past, residents are encouraged to co-mingle acceptable recyclable items in their recycling carts. All food-based recyclables should be rinsed. Plastic bags are not recyclable, and should not be placed in recycling carts. There is no limit to the amount of recyclables that residents can put out each week for collection. As is the case with waste items, recyclable items must be under 50lbs. LRS may reach out to residents who regularly generate more recyclables than will fit in their carts to recommend a larger or second container.
Yard Waste Collection
Yard waste collection will remain seasonal, starting April 15th, and ending on December 1st. Residents may continue to use brown craft bags for collection. Stickers will not be needed. Please place brush, limbs, branches or trimmings in bundled or twined stacks no larger than 4’ in length and 18” in diameter, at your collection point.
Christmas Tree Collection
Residents will be allowed to place Christmas trees out for collection starting the first service day after December 25th.
