May is Lupus Awareness Month

May is Lupus Awareness Month

The lupus community takes time during the month of May to educate others on an illness that impacts so many people’s lives but is not very well known. This is the fourth year that Lakeshore has partnered with the Lupus Society of Illinois (LSI) to raise awareness and money to help fight the disease.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy cells. Anyone can be impacted by lupus, but it predominately affects women of color. About five million people live with lupus worldwide and there is currently no cure for the disease. This is why Lakeshore raises money and awareness for the disease and partners with LSI to work to provide more resources to finding a cure.

Alan Handley’s, Lakeshore’s CEO, high school daughter, Maddie Handley, was diagnosed with lupus four years ago. Maddie is one of the many reasons the Lakeshore community raises money and awareness for lupus. Since her diagnosis, Lakeshore has fundraised nearly $400,000 total over the past three years to help fight the disease.

Last year, Lakeshore raised $90,000 for LSI and the first lupus clinic at Comer Children’s Hospital. Lupus can have many symptoms and because of this, it can be expensive for people to go to different types of hospitals for their symptoms. The lupus clinic at Comer Children’s Hospital allows for children with lupus to go to one place to get treated no matter what their symptoms are. This helps parents save time and money when making sure that their children are getting their lupus symptoms treated properly and quickly.

All of the money raised went towards research to find the causes as well as a possible cure of lupus and providing resources to health care professionals that work to fight the disease.

Lakeshore is a company that cares about its employees and the people we service. It is important to Lakeshore to support Lupus Society of Illinois because it is an organization that is close to the hearts of the people in this company and is our way of giving back to the communities we service.

The Chicago Lupus Walk this year is September 22, 2019. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to learn more details of our upcoming lupus fundraising events. Check back later to learn how you can donate to help fight lupus.
