A List of Common Mulching Mistakes in Glen Ellyn

Many people spread mulch in their yards without really knowing the best way to use it. This often results in damaged landscapes that are hurt by mulch, more than they are helped by it.

How do you ensure that you’re using mulch correctly in your Glen Ellyn, Illinois yard? One way is by knowing what not to do with it. Here is a list of common mulching mistakes to avoid.

Spreading it Too Thick

One of the most common mistakes individuals make when applying mulch is spreading it too thick. The problem with doing this is that it can have negative effects on your trees, plants and grass, making it difficult for them to obtain necessary nutrients.

Ideally, mulch will be laid at a thickness of 2 to 4 inches. Laying any less than this will eliminate many of the benefits that you might get from mulch. Laying any more than this can cause damage to your yard.

Mounding it Around the Bases of Trees

Somewhere along the way, people thought it would be a good idea to create mulch mountains around the bases of trees. While doing this might create a nice aesthetic effect, it’s bad for your trees.

Laying mulch in this manner not only serves as an open invitation for insects, it also causes tree roots to rot. This is due to the fact that mountains of mulch prevent moisture from making its way down into the soil.

Again, it’s recommended that you lay mulch at a thickness of between 2 and 4 inches around trees.

Moving it After it’s Been Laid

Another mistake that people tend to make with mulch is removing it from a spot where it’s already been laid and transferring it to another spot. If mulch has been sitting in one area for an extended period of time, it has likely already transferred many of its nutrients to the soil below it.

By moving mulch such as this to a new location, you are not only stripping the formerly mulched area of nutrients, you are moving nutrient-less mulch to the new area. In short, placing used mulch in a new area will serve no benefit to plants.

Using Low-quality Mulch

Not all mulch is created equally. The capabilities of your mulch will depend entirely upon the material from which it’s created. The best types of mulch are made from hardwood, and are manufactured without the use of pesticides or chemicals.

While other types of mulch will offer the same aesthetic benefits, they will not offer the same functional benefits. In fact, using low-quality mulch can actually be a detriment to the plants in your yard.

Not Mulching Bare Areas

Most individuals spread mulch in garden beds and around trees. Unfortunately, many tend to ignore areas of bare soil. This is a problem for one primary reason: soil erosion.

Soil erosion occurs when topsoil is pulled away by wind or water. When topsoil is pulled away, portions of soil lose vital nutrients. Because these nutrients are necessary for proper plant growth, the plants around this bare soil often suffer.

Mulching bare soil areas can drastically reduce soil erosion, which will improve plant health.
