5 Mulching Tips to Follow

Thinking about applying some mulch to your Deerfield, Illinois yard before fall arrives? If so, you’re making a great choice. Mulch is a highly beneficial substance that can work wonders for both the health and aesthetic of your property.

However, when laying mulch, there are some things of which you must be cognizant. In essence, laying mulch incorrectly could cause more trouble than good.

With that being said, here are 5 mulching tips to follow.

1. Don’t Use Too Much

One of the keys to mulching is to not use too much mulch. If you spread your mulch on too densely, it can cause planted roots to grow at shallow levels, compromising their overall strength throughout the seasons. In high heats, heavy mulch can actually cause plants to die.

It’s recommended that you lay your mulch at a thickness of between 2 and 3 inches. This helps regulate soil temperature and prevent erosion without harming plants. Rarely should your mulch exceed 6 inches.

2. Don’t Create Mulch Mounds Around Trees

In some parts, it is a popular practice to surround the bases of trees with large mounds of mulch. While this might look good to some, it can be seriously detrimental to the health of your trees.

High mounds of mulch such as these generally attract insects and moisture. Insects and moisture can wreak havoc on a tree, causing it to rot away slowly.

It is recommended that you lay around 2 or 3 inches of mulch in a flat manner at the bases of your trees.

3. Leave It Where It’s Laid

Another tip to keep in mind is to leave mulch where it’s already been laid. Digging up and moving mulch that has been sitting on the ground for a prolonged period of time can have serious negative effects on your soil and plants. Not only can it cause soil to dry out, it can cause plant roots to deteriorate.

If you wish to lay mulch in a new area, it’s highly recommended that you purchase a new batch. Transferring mulch that has already settled is a risk.

4. Mulch Frequently

In many cases, homeowners will lay down a new batch of mulch once a year and call it quits. You should know, however, that a single bath of mulch is typically not enough for year-long benefits. If you want to reap the benefits of mulch throughout the entire year, you’ll likely need to spread mulch several times a year.

We highly recommend laying new mulch in spring, summer and fall seasons. This helps ensure your soil is always receiving the proper amounts of nutrients and that it is protected from the cold throughout the winter months.

5. Use it Creatively

When homeowners use mulch, they typically lay it only in garden beds and around trees. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with this, it’s only the bare minimum of what you can do with mulch.

Mulch is primarily used as an aesthetic entity; something that brings a touch of atmosphere to your property. However, we recommend that you try to get creative with your much. Lay it around yard signs, mailboxes and other entities that could use a bit of spicing up. Use your imagination; don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations.
