Outdoor Winter Safety

Winter can bring a lot of dangers to people, especially if they are outdoors. With snow and ice during winter, there is an increased chance of falling or slipping. Whether you are going to the grocery store, going to work, walking your dog or exercising, it is crucial to be as safe as possible when there is snow and ice on the ground. Over 116,000 people in the US are injured and more than 1,300 are killed on snowy, slushy or icy roads and walk ways every winter. Utilize the tips below to keep you and your loved ones safe while outside this winter.

How to be Safe Outdoors this Winter

  • Wear proper shoes for the weather
  • Take smaller steps when walking, especially on ice
  • Walk slowly and never run on icy ground
  • Walk in designated walkways as much as possible
  • If a walkway is completely covered with ice; try to travel along the edge for traction
  • When snow and ice are present, remove it or treat it with salt
