Our Management Team – Lakeshore Recycling Systems

Alan T. Handley

Chief Executive Officer

Alan T. Handley is a transformational Waste and Environmental Services industry leader and President and Chief Executive Officer of Rosemont, Ill.-based LRS (formerly known as Lakeshore Recycling Systems), since the company’s founding in 2013. Under Alan’s leadership, LRS has experienced exponential growth, disrupting the Waste industry status quo through a sustainability-focused circular operating model designed to generate more revenue by diverting and repurposing more material from the waste stream. Today, LRS ranks as the largest independent waste, recycling and portable services provider in the Midwest United States, and the fifth largest waste and recycling provider in North America.

During his tenure, Alan has scaled LRS revenues from $60 million with 220 employees in 2013, to more than $430 million in revenue with more than 1,800 employees in 2021, successfully executing 20 acquisitions in 2021. Alan sets the vision, pace and passion at LRS, introducing new technologies and innovations in waste and recycling, including in 2018, when LRS was the first in the nation to deploy the Machinex SamurAITM robotic sorting machine. LRS today operates 62 facilities across nine Midwestern states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kansas, bringing needed competition to waste, recycling and portable services markets.

Prior to LRS, Alan served as Executive Vice President and CFO at Aldridge Electric, a leading electrical contractor focused on complex critical infrastructure projects. Other leadership positions included Managing Director at KPMG, Heller Financial, Price Waterhouse, and the United States Marine Corps.

Alan holds an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where he later served as an adjunct professor, and a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from Northern Illinois University (NIU). Alan is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor, and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. His board commitments include the Lupus Society of Illinois, the Pediatric Lupus Clinic at the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, and the Board of Executive Advisors at the NIU College of Business, where Alan was recently awarded the 2021 College of Business Distinguished Alumnus Award.

A scuba diver, sailor, mountaineer and traveler, Alan is passionate about conserving and protecting the environment, and keeping plastic out of the world’s oceans. Through his involvement with University of Chicago Medicine and the Lupus Society of Illinois, he is also actively involved in raising awareness and support for individuals impacted by Lupus.

Alan enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, flying, diving, skiing and sailing.

Josh Connell leads the company’s municipal, residential and commercial sales and is an integral part of LRS daily operations. Josh brings to LRS more than 20 years experience in the waste industry. John Larsen

Chief Operating Officer

John’s impressive 25-year background in the waste industry makes him a valuable asset to LRS and, more importantly, its valued customers. After joining LRS in 2014 with previous tenure at one of LRS’ largest competitors, John quickly became the driving force behind LRS’ revenue growth. His extensive production and operational industry knowledge resulted in a newly developed operations strategy and created a successful business model to create efficiencies across the company, including route optimization and general operations.

Passionate about ensuring LRS’ operational expertise is above industry standards, Larsen implemented a truck automation initiative. Since 2015, 90% of LRS’ residential fleet has been automated. Automating LRS’ residential fleet ensures that LRS drivers remain safe and healthy, reducing overall physical labor during routes. Knowing that LRS drivers are part of the life-force of the company, Larsen set up new methods to ease driver responsibility. One initiative included providing driver tablets for all commercial routes, which decreased program paper usage by 50%.
