Village of Elburn Residential Refuse, Recycling and Yard Waste Services

Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) is proud to be a partner to the Village of Elburn and provide Elburn homeowners a variety of waste collection options with our residential service program. We provide weekly residential refuse, recycling and yard waste services for the Elburn residents as well as options for electronic waste disposal and an organics compost option with yard waste. What is the pickup day in Elburn?

Elburn service day is Wednesday. All materials need to be placed curbside by 6:45AM in order to ensure collection. Six major holidays may postpone the regular collection day. See Holiday Schedule below.

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH WEEKLY REFUSE, RECYCLE and YARD WASTE COLLECTION?

  • Weekly collection of unlimited quantities of properly prepared (containerized or bagged):
    • Refuse
    • Recycle
    • Yard waste
  • 95 gallon wheeled refuse (garbage) cart with a flip top lid
  • 65 gallon wheeled recycle cart with a flip top lid
  • One (1) large or bulk item that does not fit into a container or bag
  • Organic Food Scraps Compost Collection – SEASONAL
  • Paperless billing and automatic payment options

WHAT OTHER SERVICES and OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

    • Option for additional carts for monthly fee
      • Residents who would like to exchange their garbage, recycle or yard waste cart may request by emailing or calling the LRS Elburn Customer Service.
      • A $15.00 Exchange Fee applies.
      • Residents may select from three (3) different size carts being a 35, 65 or 95 gallon for refuse (garbage) or recycling.
  • Optional yard waste cart service
    • Yard waste carts are an option for a small monthly fee. Please call or email LRS Elburn Customer Service.
  • Optional curbside electronic waste (E-Waste) collection
    • Electronic waste (E-Waste) requiring special disposal that is not accepted with the weekly collection can be collected curbside by purchasing E-Waste stickers available at Jewel and Village Hall. More information can be found in the E-Waste section below.

GENERAL COLLECTION GUIDELINES AND CART INFORMATION

Wednesday is the service day.  All garbage, recycling and yard waste will be collected between the times of 7AM and 5PM on your collection day. The collection is between 7AM and 5PM; place items out by 6:45AM to ensure collection.

Basic service includes UNLIMITED garbage, recycling and yard-waste service. A default service will be provided and charged for residents using the 95-gallon garbage cart rate unless a different cart selection is made before Sept. 12. Residents have until November 1st to request or exchange carts at no charge.

  • $15 delivery or exchange fee applies after Nov.1 2018

Garbage Carts and Collection

All residents have the option to choose a 35, 65 or 95-gallon garbage cart.

Residents will automatically be delivered a 95-gallon garbage cart, by default, unless different cart sizes are selected. See Cart Selection Information if you’d like a different size.

There is no limit to the amount of garbage LRS will collect. Residents may use a non-LRS cart or container for waste or recycling materials that do not fit into the LRS issued cart so long as it does not exceed 35 gallons, 50 lbs. and has two handles.

Please note: garbage mixed with yard waste, leaves or organic material will not be collected, as this material is not permitted in State of Illinois Landfills.

Residents may request an additional 95-gallon garbage cart for $5.00 per month.

Recycling Carts and Co-Mingled Collection

All residents have the option to choose between a 35, 65 or 95-gallon recycle cart.

Residents will automatically be delivered a 65-gallon recycle cart, by default, unless different cart sizes are selected. See Cart Selection Information if you would like a different size.

Residents who generate more recyclables, may request one (1) additional 95 gallon recycle cart at no charge. Residents may use a non-LRS cart or container for waste or recycling materials that do not fit into the LRS issued cart, so long as it does not exceed 35 gallons, 50 lbs. and has two handles.

Recycling needs to be properly prepared in accordance with the recycling guideline. All food-based recyclable containers should be rinsed. Plastic bags are not recyclable, and should not be placed in recycling carts. Click here for an LRS Recycle Guide.

Yard Waste Collection

  • Unlimited
  • April 1 through December 1
  • Yard waste can be set out using any of the following:
  • 2 ply, biodegradable paper bags not to exceed 50 lbs.
  • Containers not exceeding 35 gallons, marked with large “X” or “YW” or “YARD WASTE
  • 65-gallon yard waste carts are available for $3.00 per month
  • 95-gallon yard waste carts available for $5.00 per month
  • Brush bundles tied in biodegradable twine not exceeding 4’ length, 2’ width and 50 lbs.
  • Organic Food Scrap may be mixed in with yard waste during the yard waste season. Organic Food Scrap includes: bread, cereal, coffee grounds, dairy, egg shells, eggs, fruits, grain, pasta, shells, and vegetables.

Rates and Billing Information

  • Billed in advance, quarterly
  • Annual rate increases will apply each October through 2023
  • Garbage –Standard Monthly Rates
    • $16.75 for a 35, 65 or a 95-gallon garbage cart
  • Recycling Carts (Co-Mingled Recycling and cart is included with garbage):
    • All residents can choose between a 35, 65 or 95-gallon cart.
  • The default size to be delivered is 65 gallon.
  • Optional Yard Waste Cart
    • 65 gallon LRS issued cart – $3.00/month
    • 95 gallon LRS issued cart – $5.00/month

Cart Selection Information

 

  • Residents who missed the 9/12 cart exchange deadline for cart selection will automatically be delivered a 95-gallon cart for garbage and 65-gallon cart for recycle.
  • Cart exchange requests will be offered after 9/12 on the LRS website for those who miss the deadline.
  • Cart exchanges requested after 9/12 will be delivered after 10/1 and may take up to two weeks to be delivered. Exchanges will be done at no charge until 10/31.
  • Beginning November 1st, a $15.00 cart exchange fee will apply.

Resident Owned Garbage or Recycle Containers (all residents will use LRS carts for weekly collection)

Residents may only use a non-LRS cart or container for waste or recycling materials that do not fit in the LRS issued cart so long as it does not exceed 32 gallons, 50lbs in weight and has two handles.

Bulk Items

  • One (1) bulk item per week at no charge. Includes furniture such as a couch, table, or chair.
  • Additional bulk items may be collected for $25 per item. Please call LRS for information.
  • Carpet rolls must be no longer than 4’ in length, and 18” in diameter

“White Goods” (Appliances)

“White Goods,” are appliances containing CFC, HCFC, PCBs, mercury switches or other hazardous components (refrigerators, air conditioners, humidifiers, etc.). Standard appliances will be picked up for $35.00 each. Appliances are collected separately by a box truck.

DIY Construction

Home remodeling debris not placed in a container, may be a securely tied, bundle of refuse or debris which not exceed three (3) feet in diameter, six (6) feet in length, and fifty (50) pounds in weight, or one (1) single miscellaneous or odd-shaped item of refuse or debris that does not exceed fifty (50) pounds in weight.

Home remodeling waste aside from the above, requires a special collection. Residents will need to schedule service for these items and call to receive instructions on how to best prepare them for collection.

  • Estimates will be provided and items will be charged by the yard.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees (not artificial) will be collected during the first full two weeks of January on collection day. There is no charge for this service.

Electronic Waste

Electronic Waste (E-waste) Collection. Beginning in January 2019 on the second Wednesday, the first month of every quarter, LRS will begin collecting E-Waste from the curb. E-Waste is the ONLY service requiring a sticker or stickers for items placed to the curb.

E-Waste items includes the following items, computer mice, computer monitors, computers, digital converter boxes, digital video disc players, digital video disc recorders, fax machines, keyboards, portable digital music players, printers, satellite receivers, scanners, small scale servers, televisions, video game consoles, and videocassette recorders.

HOW WILL THE COLLECTION DRIVER KNOW I HAVE PLACED E-WASTE OUT FOR COLLECTION?

Please notify LRS when you will be putting E-Waste out for collection by calling 630.581.8650 or email Elburn@LRSrecycles.com.

Please place E-Waste separate from regular garbage, recycling or yard waste. Smaller E-Waste items should be placed inside a clear plastic bag, paper grocery bag or small cardboard box, clearly marked, “E-WASTE.”

TVs and monitors should be placed on the opposite side of the driveway or at least 5 feet away from regular garbage, recycling or yard waste, and/or carts.

E-Waste Required Stickers/Item(s):

  • One (1) E-Waste Sticker = 1 small E-Waste item (such as a computer mouse, excludes TV’s and Monitors).
  • Five (5) E-Waste Stickers = One (1) bundle in brown paper bag or box not exceeding 24” x 24” x 24” (such as keyboard, video cassette recorder or small digital disc player).
  • Ten (10) E-Waste Stickers = TV or Computer Monitor

Acceptable E-Waste: blender, bread maker, cable receiver box, camera, electric carpet sweeper, digital or electric clock, coffee maker, computer monitor, computer mouse, computer hard drive, copy machine (non-commercial), computer or cable cord, curling iron, digital converter box, digital disc record, digital video disc player, DVD player, electric knife, electric toothbrush, fan, fax or copy machine, fryer, electric hair clipper/cutter, hair dryer, heater, holiday lights, iron, keyboard, landline telephone, laptop (computer), metal tool (electronic), mixer, portable digital music player, printer, projector, radio, remote, satellite dish/ receiver box, scanner, shaving equipment, stereo, television (TV’s), toaster oven, typewriter, vacuum cleaner (without bag), VCR, video cassette recorder, video game console, video game.

Items Not Accepted

The following items will not be accepted as electronic waste: large appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, washers, dryers), air conditioners, ballasts, bare CRT tubes, capacitors, dehumidifiers, household batteries (AA, AAA, D, C, Lithium), light bulbs, liquids, microwaves, salvaged units, smoke detectors, VHS cassette tapes and medical equipment (any material that is considered or has come in contact with biohazard or radioactive material).

WILL THERE BE A CHARGE FOR E-WASTE CURBSIDE COLLECTION?

LRS E-Waste curbside collection is a sticker-based program. The E-Waste sticker is available for $3.00 at Jewel and Village Hall in Elburn. The cost for handling E-Waste varies depending on the item. Please see the back of this card for further details.
