Skokie

Residential recycling services

If you need information regarding Skokie’s residential waste collection, please contact the Village directly at 847-933-8427.

In a contract that began on June 1, 2016, Skokie residents have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the environment through this comprehensive weekly recycling program. In addition to servicing Skokie residents, LRS is also the Village of Skokie’s franchised commercial waste hauler, which went into effect February 2012.

Residents are provided with 65-gallon carts for recyclable materials from the village of Skokie. The collection of recyclable materials occurs once a week in residential areas. Please flatten large boxes and place them next to the cart. Please DO NOT mix garbage or landscape waste in the recycling cart.

In curbside collection areas, set out recycling containers by 7a on the day of pickup, but not before 6p the night before collection.

Please be advised that the Village of Skokie still maintains their own waste collection services to residents.

LRS provides weekly residential recycling service to:

Village of Golf Residential Waste & Recycling

Golf & The Environment

With 500 people and just under 200 households, the Village of Golf is small but mighty. The village trusted the team at LRS because we are a locally owned business, with the services of a corporately owned giant. LRS understands that the Golf community is fiercely independent with a dedicated police department, post office and beautiful homes. For almost 20 years, the residents of Golf have trusted us when they require roll-off dumpsters, on-site storage, portable bathrooms, mulch and street sweepers. At our recycling and transfer center in Northbrook, we recycle over 75% of materials and waste brought in. We set the standard in waste management industry, making sure that the Village of Golf receives nothing less than exceptional service and high quality solutions.

As we continue to enhance our services, we are confident that our partnership with the Village of Golf will continue to grow as well. With a recycling mentality, LRS and Golf are working together to create a more sustainable place to live.

The Village of Winnetka Public Works provides garbage pickup on the same schedule. Residents are provided a 95-gallon recycling cart, a 65-gallon garbage cart and a 35-gallon organics cart. Once the organics cart is collected, LRS will transport the organics to be recycled into compost. LRS is proud to service Highwood’s 5,405 residents.

Highwood Residential Yard Waste

Highwood & the environment

The land that makes up Highwood, Illinois was originally owned by the Potawatomi Indians, until 1833, when it was ceded to the United States. It was also home to Fort Sheridan, an active training ground during World War 2. The city has flourished since then and has become an attraction for North Shore dining and nightlife.

As we continue to expand and enhance our services we are in a very good position to provide the businesses and residents of Highwood exceptional service. Our roll-off dumpster service, portable bathrooms, on-site storage containers, street sweepers, mulch and recycling and transfer center are all the best in the waste management business.

Compared to other waste management companies, there are a few things that separate us in the eyes and hearts of Highwood residents and businesses.

First, they know they can trust us. For nearly 20 years we have built an impeccable reputation by providing outstanding customers service, fair pricing, on time deliveries and pickups and an unwavering commitment to the environment.

Second, we are a trusted partner. We provide free consultations designed to make sure you have the right suite of services to complete you residential or commercial project. When you call one of our experts they will ask all the right questions which will enable them to give you the best advice.

Finally, we have a strong commitment to the environment and community. We have made significant investments in technology that enables us to separate and sort all the materials brought to our recycling and transfer center. Our investments in machinery that helps us to more efficiently recycle waste and debris, is a clear indication that we are relentlessly focused on green recycling practices.

Please reach out to our dedicated Customer Service Center at 773-685-8811 with any questions. Or, feel free to visit our recycling and transfer center in Northbrook.

Residents who elect for top of the driveway program may use a 35 gallon trash container, 65 gallon trash container or an independently purchased 32 gallon refuse container (maximum of three) with two handles or a grip and a tight fitted lid. Refuse must be contained and fit inside the container when full and may not exceed 50lbs when full.

  • Please MARK the additional box or container used as RECYCLE so the driver can clearly see it
  • Plastic bags with recycling material will not be accepted
  • Shredded paper is not considered recyclable material, please contact the customer service department for further disposal options
  • Rental recycling bins are available upon request to customer service

Village of Glencoe residents can have combined curbside yard waste and composting services that allows residents to dispose of compostable materials, landscape waste and food scraps in a biodegradable paper yard waste bag or curbside bin between April 1st and December 15th.

There are two options for utilizing this service: sticker-based program and a subscription program with an annual payment. Please note that composting service is available if you do not need yard waste collection.

Leaf Collection Program

The Village of Glencoe offers an annual curbside Leaf Collection Program that begins in mid-October and continues through the end of November or later (start and end dates depend upon leaf fall). For the third year, LRS will collect leaves on behalf of the Village.

As you put out leaves for collection, remember the following:

  • Watch the Village’s “News and Headlines” on the website home page for more updates on start and end dates as well as when crews will be in your area.
  • Pile leaves in a row along the parkway in front of your property. Leaf piles in the street are a traffic hazard and clog the storm sewers, which can cause flooding.
  • A long, low row of leaves is better than a single large pile and helps limit the blowing of leaves into the street.
  • Crews will make four to five passes through each neighborhood.
  • Residents who use a landscape contractor are urged to have the contractor remove leaves at the time their yard is serviced (this is often included).

As a reminder, the use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers is permitted from March 15 to May 15 and September 15 to December 15. Commercial landscape maintenance contractors may operate from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday to Friday and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Work is prohibited on Sundays and holidays. Contact Public Works at (847) 835-4134 with questions.

Yard Waste Sticker Program

Residents, who are not subscribing to the annual combined food scrap and yard waste collection subscription service, must affix blue stickers to each biodegradable paper yard waste bag (no larger than 44-gallons) or bundle of branches/brush. Stickers may be purchased at the Grand Food Center or at Village Hall.

Yard Waste Subscription Program

Landscape waste subscribers may place unlimited bags or bundles of combined food scrap and landscape waste material at the curb each week on Wednesdays from April 1 through December 15. The annual subscription fee is included on your quarterly bill and does not require yard waste stickers. To subscribe, contact us at 844-633-3577.

Food Scrap Composting Station

The Village also provides a food scrap composting drop-off station for residents, year-round and at no additional cost. The station is located at 320 Temple Court, behind the Public Works Garage and is serviced by LRS. The station is not intended for yard waste and only Kraft paper bags are allowed in the bins. Please do not place any plastic bags in the bins, including “biodegradable” bags.

What is Considered Yard Waste?

Yard waste is garden trimmings, branches and brush under two inches (2”) in diameter not exceeding 4’ in length, leaves, flowers, tree droppings (crabapples and pinecones), garden plants, vines, weeds, grass clippings and yard trimmings.

What are considered acceptable food scraps?

Bread, cereal, coffee grounds, dairy, eggshells, eggs, fruits, grain, pasta, shells, vegetables

Approved yard waste containers and bags

  • 2-ply, biodegradable yard waste bags or personal containers placed out for collection on the service day.
  • Personal cans/containers labeled YARD WASTE and weighing less than 50lbs when full.
  • Brush and branches must be bundled and tied with biodegradable twine or string (no metal). Each bundle must be no longer than 4’ in length, 2’ in diameter, weighing no more than 50lbs.
  • Individual branches must be no larger than 2” in diameter, weighing no more than 50lbs.

Christmas Trees

LRS will be picking up live Christmas trees every Wednesday for the entire month of January. Any Christmas trees that needed to be removed after the month of January would need to be prepaid and prescheduled to have them removed.

  • Live Christmas trees will be collected on each Wednesday in the month of January.
  • Please remove all hard materials from the tree prior to disposal, including ornaments, nails, stands, etc.
  • All wreaths and roping must be included with normal trash on residents’ normal collection day

Residents must place the trees outside with their trash no later than 7 a.m. To ensure the timeliness and integrity of the schedule, LRS crews will not return for special pickups. Once a street has been completed, trees will not be collected until the following week.

Bulk items (that do not fit into your garbage cart) are collected loose, on your regular day of service with prepayment and prescheduling based on your program. Please see above as to what requirements are part of the program. If an item exceeds 50lbs, or does not fit in the trash cart, residents need to call LRS to schedule a special pickup. If a bulk item is considered hazardous, unacceptable for landfills or deemed unacceptable to take as garbage, the item(s) will not be taken.

Mattresses and box/bed springs must be enclosed in a plastic mattress cover and taped securely shut. Plastic mattress covers may be purchased at retail outlets such as Walmart, Lowes, Menards, Home Depot and storage unit facilities. Packaging wrap or trash bags cut up and taped around to cover a mattress or box spring are also acceptable options.

Each bulk item is required to be prescheduled and prepaid to LRS.

The 2025 Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2025. This is an opportunity for residents to dispose of “bulk items” that are not generally included in garbage collection such as furniture, appliances and boxes. However, hazardous waste (paint, gas, chemicals, etc.), electronics (computers, stereos, etc.), building materials (wood, lumber, drywall, etc.), tires, and landscape waste (trees, branches, logs, leaves, etc.) are not included in this program.

Oil-based paint cannot be disposed of with your regular garbage or during Spring Clean-Up. Latex paint can be disposed of with regular trash or during Spring Clean-Up because it is a non-toxic, water-based paint.  You will need to add an absorbent material such as shredded newspapers, kitty litter, sawdust, or waste paint hardener to your latex paint and let it dry out completely in a well-ventilated area and away from children and pets. Once it is dry, put the container with your garbage with the lid off. To learn more about how to dispose of items not accepted with your regular garbage collection service, please view SWANCC’s Green Pages.

Organized by the Glencoe Sustainability Task Force, the Donation and Recycle Drop-Off Event is an effort to divert items that would otherwise go to the landfill on the Village Clean-Up Days for reuse and recycling. The event is at the Southwest Metra Commuter Parking lot.  Local area organizations take assorted items for donations and recycling at different stations, including furniture, bicycles, and building materials. The 2025 Donation and Recycling Drop-Off Event is TBD.

For more information, questions and to arrange services, please call LRS Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at 844.633.3577 or email Service@LRSrecycles.com.

Improperly prepared materials placed for collection will not be collected.

How do I clean my cart?

Fill the cart with hot water and a capful of vinegar or grease-cutting dish soap. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse. Once the cart has been thoroughly rinsed, set the cart out with the lid open in the sun to dry.

What if I need my cart replaced?

Carts that are broken due to damage incurred during the collection are reported by the driver for replacement at no charge. Residents are encouraged to contact LRS if they notice damage to the cart during the collection process to request a replacement cart.

If damage occurs to the cart due to other reasons, please contact LRS to request a replacement cart.

Is this considered garbage?

Latex paint

Latex paint is considered regular garbage, but it must be completely dried, with the lid off so the driver is able to see inside the can. Dry latex paint by leaving lid off or open and/or mix kitty litter until the paint is completely absorbed. Do not place out for collection until the paint is completely dry.

Alkaline batteries

Alkaline batteries are considered regular garbage and should be thrown into the garbage. It is always recommended that tape be used on each end of the battery and placed into a plastic sandwich bag when disposing of them.

How do I report a missed pickup?

If your waste, recycling, or landscape waste is not collected on the service day by 6 pm, please contact LRS by calling 844.633.3577 or e-mailing Service@lrsrecycles.com

Please include your address and what service was missed.

Evanston & the Environment

With nearly 75,000 residents and businesses calling Evanston home and over 23,000 students attending Northwestern University, LRS plays a critical role in keeping this beautiful town green and clean. Given its proximity to downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan, real estate in Evanston is extremely expensive. As you might expect, there are hundreds of businesses and homes being remodeled every year. The residents and businesses of Evanston have come to trust us for all their waste management and recycling needs. They know they will get free and expert advice, honest pricing and on-time delivery. For 20 years, we have worked hard to earn the right to be the trusted residential and commercial waste management partner in Evanston.

When you are planning your next home or commercial renovation project, look no further. We provide on-site storage, roll-off dumpsters, street sweepers, mulch, portable bathrooms and top-of-the-line recycling and transfer services. Our closest recycling center is located in Northbrook for your recycling convenience. With LRS, you can trust that your waste will go through an extensive sorting process to ensure we uphold our values in creating a greener place to live in Evanston and all Chicagoland communities.

Evanston businesses have a wide range of service options to choose from including 65/95-gallon carts, 1 through 10-yard commercial containers, and compactor services. Also available for heavier material, construction work and clean-out work are roll-off boxes, which range in size from 10-yard to 30-yard boxes.

Recycling service options closely mirror those offered for waste services. Recycling carts will be available in the 95-gallon size, and commercial containers are available in 1 through 10-yard containers. Of course, should the need present itself, roll-off boxes are also available for recycling projects (wood, masonry, etc.). Evanston businesses are also eligible to take advantage of a 95-gallon cart or a 1yd commercial container serviced weekly at no additional cost to complement their waste services.

Garbage Collection

As part of the City’s renewal contract with LRS, Blue Island residents will now be allowed to place out two (2) bulk items each week. This is in addition to the standard waste that is placed in their waste carts each week.

Landscape waste

Available from April 1 to November 30, LRS provides a simple option for landscape waste collection. Landscape waste is collected street-side. Landscape waste must not exceed 35 gallons and service is limited to ten kraft bags, 60 pounds in weight. Branches must be bundled with biodegradable string/ twine not exceeding four feet in length, 36 inches and 60 pounds.

Single-stream recycling

Having opened Chicagoland’s state-of-the-art single-stream recycling center in 2016, LRS focuses on waste diversion to recycle more and send less waste to landfills. LRS is committed to making the surrounding communities a greener place to live.

LRS has a single-stream recycling center dedicated to sorting and separating recyclables. This 40,000 square-foot facility is designed to handle more than 110,000 tons of high-grade residential and commercial single-stream recyclables, sorting, separating and allocating over 20 tons of waste per hour.

Recycle tips

  • Recyclable plastic items are #1 – #7 except #6.
  • Recycling materials should be loose and not bagged. If you must use a bag, it needs to be transparent. Black bags will be considered contaminated.
  • Containers that have previously stored liquid or food should be emptied. Food and liquid containers do not have to be rinsed unless it was previously filled with a heavy substance. Examples of heavy substance products include tomato paste, peanut butter and vegetable oil.
  • Lids and caps from plastic bottles and glass jars is preferred to remain intact prior to recycling.
  • To limit the amount of space used, break down any cardboard boxes into pieces.
  • The following items are NOT recyclable although they are made from paper, plastic and cardboard
      • Pizza boxes
      • Styrofoam
      • Paper plates
      • Plastic cups (i.e. Solo cups)
      • Paper towels
      • Plastic grocery bags
As we continue to enhance our service areas, we are confident that our partnership with the City of Blue Island will continue to grow as well. With a recycling mentality, LRS and Blue Island are working together to create a more sustainable place to live.
